ST. PETERSBURG, FL, March 6, 2014 – Some of the most exciting racing on the planet will take place at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, March 28-30. Event organizers revealed today the track schedule with a diverse line-up of exhilarating on-track programming that will complement the opening race of the 2014 IndyCar Series.
For the first time, race fans will have the opportunity to experience the spectacle of Robby Gordon's SPEED Stadium Super Trucks on the picturesque streets of St. Petersburg. The series marries the excitement of motocross with the best of Baja, featuring high-powered off-road trucks that race side-by-side against obstacles that include huge jumps, crossovers, whoop sections and tight corners.
"We are thrilled with the on-track programming that we have secured for our 10th edition," said Tim Ramsberger, President of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. "The on-track programming features something for everyone, from sports cars to off-road vehicles. It's the perfect mix and we think both race fans and first time visitors alike will agree.”
Also opening its season on the streets of St. Petersburg is the Pirelli World Challenge. The competitive production based series allows teams, manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers a chance to test their products in thrilling 50 minute-sprint races complete with standing starts. The series marks its 25th anniversary in 2014. The weekend will feature two Pirelli World Challenge GT/GTA/GTS races - one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will also present the entire Mazda Road to Indy racing ladder, featuring Indy Lights, the Pro Mazda Championship and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship. The Mazda Road to Indy is one of the most successful driver development programs in the world, providing a unique, scholarship-funded path to reach the IndyCar Series and Indianapolis 500.
